Surrender, NOT Abandon Especially with the inclement weather of New Hampshire, we strongly urge that people NOT abandon animals off-hours at the shelter. To leave an animal tied up outside a shelter, or left in a box, exposes the animal to inclement weather conditions, may render the animal defenseless against other animals of prey, and may otherwise endanger the animal. LRHS has had a case where kittens were left in a large airtight tupperware container on the side of the road! In another case, a dog was tied to the railing of our porch. It jumped off and was hanging by it's neck when discovered. Most recently, a mother and her litter of nine kittens were abandoned in a filthy tent on the side of the road down aways from the shelter. They were of course very traumatized. LRHS encourages owners to know that surrendering an animal in person is okay, and may be the best thing to do for the welfare of the animal. This is a common occurrence and one of the main reasons we exist! By surrendering an animal the shelter is able to acquire important medical information, behavioral tendencies, etc., particular to that animal. Please be humane and do the right thing: surrender animals, don't abandon them.
